There are 4 spacious consulting rooms, allowing space and time for clinicians to perform thorough examinations and extensive discussion of patients’ conditions.
Dedicated intensive care unit
Our intensive care unit (ICU) is fully equipped to enable the optimal care of ill patients. Incubators are available for cats and small dogs and the kennels have oxygen outlets for providing oxygen therapy. When required, patient warming is provided either in an incubator or, for larger patients, on special medical-grade heated mattresses. There are numerous electronic multi-parameter monitors that give continuous information on such features as blood pressure, oxygen levels in the blood and the electrical activity of the heart (ECG).
24 hour team that will look after your pet
Southfields Veterinary Specialists is staffed by veterinary surgeons and qualified veterinary nurses, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. The on-duty vets and nurses are ably supported by our teams of student veterinary nurses, veterinary nurse assistants and animal care assistants.
Owners are often particularly concerned with their pet’s care at night and at weekends. Our vets and nurses work 24 hours a day throughout these periods, providing the necessary monitoring and treatment of all patients that need to be hospitalised. Whatever the nature of a hospitalised patient’s problem, the vet in charge of the case can, if the need arises (and with the consent of the owner), contact one or more of our specialist vets who are also on emergency duty.
Separate cat and dog wards
Spacious walk-in kennels enable large dogs and even giant breeds, such as St Bernards, to be comfortably hospitalised. The dedicated cat ward ensures all feline patients are as stress-free as possible and our isolation ward minimises the risk of spread of contagious diseases to other in-patients.

Bringing your cat to the vet can be stressful for you and for your cat. We do all we can to minimise the difficulties that cats and their owners might encounter when they come to see us. Southfields offer a separate cat waiting area, with barriers to the rest of the waiting room, allowing your cat to relax in his or her basket, out of sight of other animals
Diagnostic imaging suite containing state-of-the-art equipment
Extensive advanced imaging facilities are available for investigation of patients. These include digital radiography, ultrasonography, digital fluoroscopy, onsite CT scanner and MRI scanner.
Imaging forms the cornerstone of many of the investigations required by our other specialties, and it is comforting to know that our superb state-of-the art all-digital imaging facilities are backed by our highly experienced imaging team.
- MRI Scanner
Southfields have some of the most advanced MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanning equipment available in veterinary facilities in the UK, but the imaging department is staffed by a highly experienced team. The facility and the staff are available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year in order to give the best levels of patient and client care we can provide.
- CT Scanner
CT (computed tomography) scanning is a diagnostic tool used to look at various parts of the body, especially those made of bone (including joints), air (including lungs and the nose), and some soft tissue structures, particularly those with a blood supply.
- Endoscopy
Endoscopy involves the use of an endoscope – a small camera mounted on a thin probe – to look inside organs which could otherwise be very difficult to inspect. A rigid endoscope is one which cannot be bent to go around corners, unlike a flexible endoscope which is often used to inspect the inside of the digestive tract (stomach and intestines).
Radiotherapy and advanced cancer treatments
Southfields Veterinary Specialists is one of only a handful of specialist veterinary centres within the UK to have a linear accelerator to administer radiotherapy. We are also involved with clinical trials with new anti-cancer drugs with a view to improving the patient outcome and contributing to advancements in cancer treatment.
On-site diagnostic laboratory
Southfields Veterinary Specialists provides a comprehensive laboratory service for all of our veterinary patients. Blood tests, urine analysis and cytology are important steps in the investigation of many of the cases seen by our various specialties, and it is comforting to know that our superb state-of-the art laboratory facilities will enable our highly experienced clinicians to make the right decisions, and enable them to act swiftly when time is of the essence, such as in emergency situations.
